Would prohibit nikab in secondary schools – NRK

The committee wants a rule with the following wording: Eleven will actively participate in the training. Elevens face should be fully visible.

The decision was taken by the committee on culture and education today, in connection with the revised rules and regulations for students in secondary schools in Vest-Agder county.

The County Council shall in a meeting in October to take a final decision on changes to school rules.

the reason is that one of the county’s schools were approached by a student who wants to use burqa covering face.

Covering the face is treated on the basis of rules and regulations for students in secondary schools, as outlined in the education Act § 3-7.

it is emphasized that in order to achieve excellence in teaching and learning, teachers and students could see each other’s faces. It is also necessary that the teacher can identify each student in an assessment situation.

The purpose of a ban on garments covering the face is to promote pupils’ learning.

Integrating Committee would ban

Labor, SV and centrist parties will prohibit nikab in school. In a 50-page memo, named “Ten Commandments for better integration”, supplied input to a new integration policies.

The committee believes face covering (nikab, burka) inhibits communication and interaction. To avoid conflicts around the identification and the way this should be done on, the Committee believes that face covering should be prohibited at school.

Consultation participants were asked to decide two alternative formulations.

  • Option 1 : Eleven will actively participate in education and pupil face must be visible.
  • Option 2 : Eleven will actively participate in the training, and therefore the use of headgear that completely or partially covers the pupil’s face is not allowed. The ban does not include headwear where the face is fully visible.

Four of consultative bodies want option 1, citing the reason that this has a
more positive approach than option 2. Elevorganisationen not want ban but
prefer option 1 if one of the options must be selected.

District Administrator proposes ban
