Bergen City Council can not both adopt ambitious targets for reducing emissions and simultaneously facilitate the runway 2 at the airport. At least not about climate commitment to have credibility, we could read in Fanaposten a while ago.
The figure is based on Norconsult has prepared two runways, and the figure itself is bad enough. Worse is that emissions in fact may increase much more than the 76 000 tonnes which will be assumed.
The problem with the number of Norconsult report is that all emissions other than CO2 are excluded. In an accompanying note says that the climate effects of water vapor and other emissions are “very complex and currently poorly understood,” but in a report from CIENS Research Center for Environment and Society, written by climate scientists at CICERO, states that it is common to calculate additional effects with a weighting factor of 1.2-1.8.
Read more about runway 2 and freight terminal:
With this knowledge, we can expect that an additional runway at the airport will increase Bergens emissions by up to 136,800 tonnes of CO2 equivalents. That means over 16 percent of current greenhouse gas emissions, but it gets worse.
The carbon footprint for runway 2 takes namely only in terms of emissions from airplanes arriving Flesland. Half of emissions is thus attributed to other airports when only departures count. Although a charter only transports Bergen to and from warmer countries, will only count upon retirement.
The problem is that it is less important for the global climate about Bergen will be responsible or not. An additional runway may increase emissions by as much as 273,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalents.
By facilitating increased air traffic, we contribute to a warmer planet regardless of the percentage that counts in Bergen own carbon footprint.
In the Green Party, we are pleased that city council will not dismiss that particular area at the airport to land purpose Airport in Municipal Master Plan for land management, but less satisfied with the area still to be held. City council will thus not rule out a future expansion of the airport.
The Greens settles on a more restrictive policy for the sake of the climate, and believes it is time to shelve the runway 2. This means that area can be released for other purposes, and not least, we want to look into the possibility of adding the new freight terminal where runway 2 could come.
