LATEST: The German news agency DPA reports that EU countries doubles monetary efforts to work for boat people. Previously it was known that the Mediterranean countries would ask about this, but that it would probably be denied.

Reuters sources in Brussels said that EU leaders should have agreed a dozen proposals for dealing with refugee disaster in the Mediterranean. But only the first point, which concerns “strengthening presence at sea,” is likely to be implemented anytime soon.

Last year, 150,000 boat people over Mediterranean to Italy. If nothing is done, 200,000 people have arrived Italy from North Africa within the year is, according to Italian authorities.

But boat people will not necessarily experience the dream about a future in Europe. Most of them will, according to The Guardian, be sent back through a new rapid repatriation program coordinated by the EU border authorities, Frontex.

In the leaks also shows that despite pressure for a major expansion of a search and rescue operation in the Mediterranean will EU leaders probably go against it.

Instead, EU leaders are likely to be agreed to carry out a systematic effort to identify, gain control and destroy ships before they are used by traffickers.

– A fight against slavery

European leaders have received heavy criticism for missing handling of the growing refugee crisis. Over 1,700 people have died in their attempts to cross the Mediterranean on their way to Europe so far this year, Amnesty International estimates.

– The fight against human trafficking means a struggle against slavery. It is not just a question of safety, but about human dignity, said Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi before the summit.

A military operation is one of the measures EU stat and government should consider to combat human trafficking from Libya. If this be the outcome, it will be the first time the Union adopts such a decision, according to news agency AFP.
