Odin (64) was near death. The doctor sent him home with aspirin and sleeping pills – Nordlys

– There is probably a miracle that I’m still alive. “It’s strange you live,” the doctor said to me when I came into the ICU, says 64-year-old.

After 3 weeks and as many doctor visits Sonjatun he was finally sent to UNN in Tromsø. It was at the last minute. Physician journal from the hospital show that he was near death.

heartsick since 2013

The retired chief officer of Uløya been heartsick since 2013. 2 November last year he felt so bad that he had to see a doctor at Storslett.

– I had pain in my chest and was very short of breath. I was sure that something serious was afoot. They examined me and gave me some pills. Then I was sent home, he said.

The Northern Lights have gained access to records which tells of 64-year-old face of the medical center on Sonjatun. Of the states that the doctor who took to Odin Larsen realized that something was wrong. “Incoming acute now due aching pain on the right side of the chest. Aggravated is a bit intermittent in nature. Says he has become more short of breath. “

– Harmless syndrome

The doctor suspects that the pain is due Tietze syndrome or intercostal myalgia. This is a harmless but painful inflammation of the rib cartilage. Odin Larsen gets antiinflammatory medications, aspirin and sleep medicine. He is placed on the infirmary for observation and repatriated the next day.

– I did not feel particularly fresher when I went home, and in the days that followed, I was worse. November 6th I called again for help. I was told to come to Sonjatun. I was very short of breath and in pain when I came in to the doctor, says Larsen.

– He knight with trunk

This time is taken radiograph. It shows an enlarged heart. I note from your doctor will be indicated that the patient is anxious disease. In addition, he has a heart condition, but the general condition is good, turn the doctor stuck.

“Clinical handsome, fast and rambling. Going fast with briefcase, talking without wheezing, eat a sandwich while on consultation. “

The doctor still thinks it’s about a harmless inflammation. Now he also angstempende pills. He gets once accommodated at the infirmary before he discharged and sent home.

– I have read this note where I springer with trunk. It is completely incomprehensible. When I traveled out as helmsman I used enough to carry a suitcase, but I traveled without, when I went to Sonjatun. And I was anything handsome when I talked to the doctor. I was simply in lousy shape says Larsen.

Gets worse

A few days later his condition worsened. Friday, November 21, he calls the doctor at 5 o’clock in the morning. Then he sat in a chair all night because he fails to breathe properly when he lies. At noon he takes Taxi to Sonjatun and examined by one of the doctors. The note stated that he is conspicuously short of breath. Anew is taken røntgebilde. Now doctor unsure about the diagnosis they have set is correct:

“Have the doctors been concluded Tietze syndrome / interkosyal myalgia without good explanation for his persistent dyspnoea (Wheezing)”

UNN is approached, and in consultation with the hospital gets Odin Larsen sent by ambulance to Tromso.

Found severe heart

It’s full alarm when he comes into the UNN. Here it is noted that in addition to being serious at heart, among other things, an infection and pulmonary edema. Hjertesviktsymtomene are classified in NYHA class 4, which is the most severe. He has liver failure and kidney failure and is being treated in intensive care. He has plenty of water in the body, and it becomes drained 7 liters. First December 11, three weeks after he was admitted, he discharged and can go home.

– Saved my Life

– I am incredibly happy that I came to UNN this evening. I later spoke with the doctor who treated me there. He said that this was close. When I came to Sonjatun they said at first that they would add me into the infirmary over the weekend. Then I had hardly been alive now, says Odin Larsen, who is highly critical of the doctors at the health center did not he serious when he approached them for what he believed was heart disease and water in the lungs.

– Know definitive ethene today

Kommuneoverlege Øyvind Roarsen says that a country doctor team does not have the same opportunities to produce complicated diagnoses the specialist in a hospital.

– Today we know the answer to this and it is obvious that it had been better for Odin Larsen if he had been admitted to hospital earlier. However, this was not an obvious conclusion for the doctors at the medical center that treated him, saying Roarsen.

– I have gone through the documents in the record and see that we have taken the samples and made the investigations it was natural to do. So one has drawn conclusions that subsequently proved to be correct.

– Larsen had already proven heart disease. He saw a doctor and complained of chest pain and breathlessness. Should not this lit red warning light?

– Yes, and it also happened here. He was admitted for observation in the infirmary. The samples and surveys that were made indicated that this could be consistent with harmless chest pain. With what we know in retrospect it had obviously been best to add his former into the UNN. Our reality is such that we must always make a thorough assessment of patients disease ailments based on clinical examination of patients and interpretation of available data as x-rays, blood tests, etc. The doctor then considers whether there is any indication to add a patient into in hospitals or in the case of diseases that can be treated locally. This is done also in Odin Larsen their case but without one managed to uncover the severity of his illness. Sometimes conclusion wrong and I can not but regret this, says Roarsen.
