Galaxy Note 2 vs Fire HD & Nexus 7: Lil' Sluggers - SidhTech

Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 has become the best-selling phablet so far, despite its large price tag. How does it, then, compare against cheaper, real tablets like the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 vs Google Nexus 7 & Amazon Kindle Fire HD

The Galaxy Note 2 has oe important ability that tablets lack – it can make phone calls. You can contact people without having to carry a tablet AND a phone. The screen is smaller, though, whereas the Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD both have 7" displays. The Note 2 has a 5.5" screen. All devices have HD, with the Galaxy Note 2 having a ppi of 256 and the other two having ppis of 216. The Note 2 also has the amazing S-Pen.

The Galaxy Note 2 has a quad-core chip and 2GB of RAM, so apps run very smoothly indeed. If you don't need lots of processing power – just a handy internet, email and games gadget – then the Kindle Fire HD has a quad-core chip and 1GB of RAM. The Google Nexus 7 will also do the job.

The Galaxy Note 2 supports SD up to 64GB. The Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7 can take up to 32GB of internal storage only.

If you're after a good camera, the Galaxy Note 2 has an 8MP camera on the back and a 1.9MP front camera. If you've already got a really good camera on your phone, then you could choose a tablet, as their cameras aren't as good, and the tablets themselves are awkward to hold.

The Google Nexus 7 runs on Android 4.2, the Kindle Fire HD on Android 4.0 and the Galaxy Note 2 on Android 4.1.2. The tablets sell for between $ 199 and $ 299, whereas the Note 2 goes for up to $ 650.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has more advantages and features than the tablets – good cameras, greater portability, phonecalls…. making it the overall winner in this specs comparison. It is, however, badly let down by its daunting price and the fact that it can't use tablet-optimised apps. If the three main advantages don't mean that much to you, save your cash and opt for the Kindle Fire HD or the Google Nexus 7.
