Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat Updates Gain Support - Gotta Be Mobile

The rumored Samsung Galaxy S3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates have gained support today thanks to another rumor that claims that both devices will indeed be getting Android 4.4 KitKat updates down the road.

Earlier this year, Samsung started rolling out the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update. Today, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out began in Korea after several weeks of leaks and rumors. However, it appears that those are going to be just two of the devices that Samsung upgrades to Android 4.4 KitKat.

According to a report from Phandroid, Samsung is going to update a great number of devices to Android 4.4 KitKat. Among them, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, two devices that have seen their Android 4.4 KitKat updates rumored several times with dates ranging from March to April.

The site also claims that the company will upgrade the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Zoom, Galaxy Mega, Galaxy S3 Mini, Galaxy Tab 3, and Galaxy Note 8.0. Oddly enough, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is not mentioned among the rumored upgrades though we imagine that if Samsung is upgrading the Galaxy S3 Mini, the Galaxy S4 Mini will get the upgrade as well.

There is no telling when Samsung might decided to upgrade any of these devices. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates are the only ones with rumored dates with the most recent rumor suggesting a roll out in March after the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 Kitkat update.

It's also not clear what will be on board any of these software updates. Both the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades are incremental updates, bringing design tweaks and KitKat features to the table.

The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 are also teetering on the edge of Google's 18 month mark. The company recommends only 18 months of software support for Android smartphones and it could be that Android 4.4 KitKat will represent the end of the road for both the Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Samsung's Galaxy Note 2 is a little younger than the Galaxy S3 and thus, its prospects for a future update beyond Android 4.4 KitKat are a little better.

Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 owners should not expect Samsung to confirm either update ahead of time as it did not give Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3 owners any type of warning ahead of their Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades.

Between all the different manufacturers and devices, there are features and hardware that are specific to each that may be completely foreign to someone. One of my favorite smartphones to show off is the Galaxy Note 2 and the S Pen. Check below for 3 of the cooler things you can show off to your friends.

Of course, since the S Pen is no longer unique to the Note 2, these tips could easily be transferred over to the Note 3 as well. Anything not having to do with the S Pen might also be available through other Samsung devices as well. Without further ado, here we go!

Gestures with S – Pen

Being able to perform certain tasks easily with the S Pen definitely helps when you're in productivity mode and have the S Pen at the ready.  Here are the gestures that you can perform to quickly navigate around your device:

• Open Quick Commands: Press the S Pen button and draw a line upward to enter Quick Commands
• Go Back: Press the S Pen  button and draw a < (greater sign) to go back
• Open Menu: Press the S Pen  button and draw an ^ (up arrow) to open the menu
• Open a Note: Press the S Pen  button and double tap the screen to open S-Note
• Capture Screenshot: Press the S Pen  button and long press the screen to take a screen shot
• Easy clip: Press the S Pen  button and draw around the area that you want to crop.
• Select Text: Press the S Pen  button and draw a straight line through a sentence or word to select it. Draw a diagonal line if you want to select multiple sentences or a paragraph.

You can even program your own Quick Commands by heading to Settings > My Device > Quick Command Settings. You can program different applications/settings to a set list of pre-set symbols. Pretty handy for customization!

First, in order to use this, you'll need to make sure that Motions are turned on. To do this, go to Settings > Motion. Some of the "cooler" Motions that you can use are the following:

• Smart Alert: Your Galaxy Note 2 will "buzz" when you pick it up to notify you that there is a missed call or message. If nothing happens, there is nothing to check on your phone!
• Quick Glance: If you've got your phone sitting next to you on the table and have this turned on, you can just wave your hand over the device and it'll turn on so you can see if there's anything you've missed.
• Direct Call: One of the coolest features I've found for the motions. If you're looking at your phone when reading a text and then hold the phone up to your ear, it'll call that person.

Tag buddies, share instantly

This is an awesome feature if you're out and about and taking photos of you and your friends. Many times, I'm asking for copies of photos that have me and my friensd to be sent my way after an event and this makes it an automatic process.

• Head to Camera.
• Go to Shooting Mode and Choose Buddy Photo Share.
• Take a photo with some people in it.
• A yellow box will indicate any faces that the camera detected.
• Tap to add a name and choose the contact you with to tag.
• Tap in a blank area and it'll ask you if you want to send the photo!
• Done! Photo taken and sent!

Perpetual court combatants Apple and Samsung have revealed their final list of allegations ahead of a trial starting March 31st. Though each started with five disputed patents, Samsung only has four now since a multimedia sync patent was knocked out earlier by Judge Lucy Koh. She also gave Apple a summary judgement win on its auto-complete IP, putting it ahead before the trial even begins. As for the rest, it’s worth noting that all of Apple’s patents are related to user interaction, while two of Samsung’s are standards-essential (FRAND) patents — which companies are normally obligated to license out. Samsung did have one point in its favor, however: the USPTO has agreed to take a second look at the validity of Apple’s aforementioned auto-complete patent.

As for the devices accused of infringing those patents, none are very recent models and many aren’t even on the market anymore. However, the historical sales of each will affect the size of any award given by the court if an allegation is upheld. That’s a lot of infringement for ultra-popular models like the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s, which have far outsold disputed models from the previous trial (like Samsung’s original Galaxy S). Other names on the list include the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 from Samsung, along with Apple’s iPad 2, iPad with Retina display (3rd-gen), iPad with Retina display (4th-gen) and iPad Mini (the original, without a Retina display). Of course, there’s always the upcoming negotiations between company CEOs to avoid all that, but… nah, who are we kidding.

New Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo takes a step backward – are we looking at a Note 2 in disguise?

We're used to seeing the Samsung Galaxy Note range grow in size year after year, which is why the launch of the Galaxy Note 3 Neo has taken most of us by surprise. Samsung Poland had the honors of officially unveiling the thing, which will eventually hit the shelves in LTE+ and 3G flavors over the coming weeks.

Those hell-bent on taking home the most grunt will be right at home with the LTE+ variant of the Note 2 Neo, which boasts a hexa-core CPU – the other 3G model packing a quad-core 1.6GHz chip.

All exciting enough, but what's the point of the pair? Well, both are fitted with 5.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED touchscreens, both run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean…which is a bit of a let-down…and both feature Samsung's ever-prized S-Pen. Long story short, it's something of a low-calorie take on the full-fat Galaxy Note 3, allowing those not keen on shelling out top-dollar a chance to take home full 2013 Note functionality.

Aside from a few very minor details, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the Note 3 Neo apart from its bigger brother. It's been labeled a Note 2 in Note 3's clothing by a fair few critics, but whatever you want to call it there's no denying it's a pretty tempting recipe.

Along with the two processor types mentioned above, both come with 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera to the rear, 2-megapixel shooter to the front, 16GB of storage (expandable by 64GB) and a 3,100mAh battery. It's all packed into an 8.6mm thick frame that weighs just 162.5g, so all in all what's technically the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Mini is every bit the winner in its own right.

Which of course leads onto two pressing questions – how much will it cost and when to expect its release date here in the US?

Launch-wise, Samsung has promised shiny-new white, black and green versions of the Note 3 Neo in the US and the UK sometime this month. As for the price, it's all a bit of a mystery so we'll have to reserve judgment for now as to whether or not it's a worthy buy.

The Android 4.4.2 KitKat software has leaked for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 devices on the AT&T cellular network.

This leaked firmware can be found on XDA developers website. However, users should beware that this leaked versions contain bootloaders, meaning that the operating system cannot be downgraded to the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean should you decide you want to remove it.

This leaked version of the Android 4.4.2 2 for the Samsung devices popped up early January and is for the Note 3 with firmware number N900AUCECMLG.

Meanwhile, Galaxy Note 3 owners in Europe who were lucky enough to be the first to receive the new Android 4.4.2 firmware update have been complaining of incompatibility issues with third party accessories since installing the new software.

Those with unofficial Note 3 smartcovers had their accessories broken after the KitKat update. The Korean electronics company announced that an update will soon be available to fix the bug and make the third-party smartcovers function again.

Samsung stated: “We have currently identified a software compatibility issue with the Galaxy Note 3 update to Android 4.4 (KitKat) and select 3rd party accessories. A software update will be available shortly. We are committed to offering a diverse and reliable mobile experience for all customers, providing continued support and solutions for any issues that arise with product updates for both Samsung manufactured and third-party accessories.”

The Android 4.4 KitKat firmware update first rolled out to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 owners in Poland and Russia last week.

Although the international update to the Note 3 has already started in Europe, there is still no official word on when the firmware upgrade will be available to Galaxy S4 or S3 owners in the U.S.

Meanwhile, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S2 can upgrade to the Android 4.4.2 KitKat via an unofficial custom CyanogenMod ROM update.

A recent video shows the Galaxy S2 i900 model running on the new software.
