Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Pro Leak: 12.2-Inch Display, 2560 x 1600, TouchWiz ... - International Business Times AU

Samsung has been making headlines especially with its reported 12.2-inch tablet. According to the latest information and leak, Samsung plans to release a 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro. Instead of focusing on just smartphones, the Korean tech giant has shifted its attention to slates. It appears 2014 will be filled with Samsung tablets. What can people expect?

As mentioned, a number of reports are hinting Samsung’s shift from smartphones to tablets in 2014. According to latest information, the company wants to dominate the tablet market in the same way it penetrated the smartphone industry.

To begin its bid, Samsung is reportedly working on a 12.2-inch tablet. The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 will be the largest of the line to date. Similar to newer tablets, the Galaxy Note Pro will also ship with the well praised S Pen stylus.

Samsung is not the only one planning to release a large tablet in 2014. Its biggest rival, Apple, has also been making headlines about a 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Samsung has not made any official announcements about the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, so people will have to wait for final details of the specs and the release date.

So far, a lead from SamMobile shows a leaked image of the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. However, people will have to settle for a rear view. There are no images yet showing the tablet’s display. From the image, it seems Samsung is set on releasing a tablet bigger than the rest of its current offerings. It also appears the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 will be thicker compared to the Galaxy Note 10.1.

SamMobile provided an update following the leak saying they have an insider confirming the existence of the new tablet.

The device will reportedly sport similar features as the Galaxy Note 10.1. The 12.2-inch tablet is expected to come with a 12.2-inch LCD display, 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and Android 4.4 KitKat. If Google will release a new OS, then the platform may change. But, so far, Android 4.4 KitKat will likely turn up. Other reported features include Samsung’s TouchWiz Nature UX, 2.3 GHz quad-core processor and 3 GB of RAM. The processor and RAM combination promises smooth operations.

The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 will also include three storage configurations (16, 32 and 64 GB), two Wi-Fi variants (Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + LTE model) and a microSD expansion slot up to 64 GB. Reports are expecting Samsung to announce more of its product during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Release Date Arrives: Verizon Galaxy S3 Receives New ... - International Business Times

Verizon is slowly but surely catching up on its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates for Samsung devices, and next on the roster to receive the operating system is the Verizon Galaxy S3.

The older-generation device got somewhat lost in the fray of Android 4.3 updates with many users anxious about seeing an update for the Verizon Galaxy Note 2; however, the network didn't forget about the Galaxy S3. Many carriers are still rolling out the Android 4.3 update in the wake of the major system bugs that caused Samsung to postpone the update for several models and carriers both in and outside of the U.S. The Verizon Galaxy S4 was among those devices to be affected by the post-update issues, which appear to be lingering depending on the carrier and the device model; however, Galaxy devices that began updating later seem to be less affected by the Android 4.3 problems than those that updated earlier. Verizon is usually last among the major carriers to give its devices support; we suspect this is in order to observe what issues occur for other carriers so that they can avoid the same issues in its updates.

Notably, reports indicate that some issues have persisted on Galaxy devices, despite Samsung's attempt to fix them. In particular Sprint Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 users and AT&T Galaxy S3 users have reported various issues. Conversely, we updated a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 to Android 4.3 a little over two weeks ago and have not encountered any major problems. Users who are concerned about possible post-update issues may want to hold off on updating their Verizon Galaxy S3 handset until more information becomes available.

The Verizon Galaxy S3 will also receive such improvements and changes as the removal of Media Backup in Backup Assistant; the ability to move apps from internal memory to SD card; 'Sound & Shot' support in the Camera app; Group Play supports simultaneous video share for up to four devices; Multi Window enhancements; access to music player controls from Lock Screen; 'Location settings completed' checkbox has been removed from Setup Wizard; increased support for Bluetooth Smart Accessories; and roaming support for the TELUS Network in Canada.

Other devices that recently updated to Android 4.3 include the AT&T Galaxy Note 2  and the Cricket Galaxy S3. Remaining to update for Verizon is the Galaxy Note 2.

20 Samsung Android 4.4 KitKat Update Predictions (S4, S3, Note, More) - Gotta Be Mobile

Despite rumors, competitors moving quickly and a carrier announcing release dates, Samsung still hasn't announced its Android 4.4 KitKat update plans for its current smartphone lineup. That means that Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 owners, and more are mostly in the dark. With 2014 fast approaching and questions swirling, we wanted to take a look into our crystal ball and make some predictions ahead of Samsung's inevitable Android 4.4 KitKat announcements.

For much of the year, Samsung remained stagnant with its software updates. Sure, we saw updates roll out to mid-range devices and such, but we didn't see the company move swiftly to Android 4.2 or Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Instead, owners of Galaxy devices like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 were made to wait, in silence, for word on their major updates.

That word finally came in October when Samsung announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2, updates that have been rolling out since the end of October. The announcement and the roll outs came just a few short days before the arrival of Google's latest Android update, Android 4.4 KitKat, an update that rolled out in late November to owners of Google's Nexus devices and to owners of devices like the Moto X.

Nexus 5 Android 4.4 photos - 4

Many devices that haven't seen an Android 4.4 KitKat roll out have seen their Android 4.4 KitKat updates confirmed. Even LG, a company notorious for slow software updates and a lack of information, has delivered information to LG G2 owners. The leader of the pack though has remained quiet about its plans.

Samsung, the world's most successful Android manufacturer, still hasn't addressed Android 4.4 KitKat, something that has left Galaxy owners in the dark about the future. Thanks to rumors and confirmations outside of Samsung, we've started to put things together. Still, nothing is set in stone as we head into 2014.

With questions about Android 4.4 KitKat on the minds of Galaxy owners across the globe, we wanted to offer our own, specific, predictions about the upcoming Samsung Android 4.4 KitKat update roll out, a roll out that almost certainly will be taking place in 2014.

Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Micro-SD-Card-Worthless-575x407

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been rumored twice already. The first time, by an alleged document that suggested that Samsung was looking at rolling out the update during the month of January.

While there were many that were skeptical about this sort of timing, French carrier SFR has backed it up, saying that it plans to roll out Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat in late January or early February. SFR was the first, and so far, only company to confirm an update. With that in mind, we offer up some predictions about the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

1. It's Coming

No question, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is on its way. Samsung may take weeks to announce the roll out but it's clear that Galaxy S4 owners will be getting an upgrade to the latest version of Android. The SFR confirmation was the nail in the coffin. This is an update that is on its way and Galaxy S4 owners in the United States and elsewhere don't need to fret.

2. Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Roll Out Begins Next Month

The biggest question of course is about when. When is the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update going to arrive? Right now, all signs point to January. We have a document that suggests that this is Samsung's target month. We have SFR saying late January to early February and we know that carriers are typically well behind the curve. International devices usually get updated first. And finally, we have Samsung's biggest Android rival, HTC, rolling out its HTC One Android 4.4 update in January.

We expect January to be the month that the Galaxy S4 receives Android 4.4 KitKat, and if it does, it would be an impressive turnaround as the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update still hasn't hit every device on the planet.

3. A Few New Features, Fixes for Android 4.3 Issues

A feature list is extremely hard to predict. Given that it's supposedly coming out in the early part of the year, we doubt it's going to have anything from the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 may be coming early but it likely won't be out before March. So, we think that the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will likely be focused on repairing issues with Android 4.3 and adding a few new features that will perhaps come from the Galaxy Note 3.

We certainly expect this update to be smaller than the update that comes later as the next one will almost certainly bring some of the Galaxy S5?s software features to the table.

4. U.S. Carriers Near the Front

Carriers in the United States showed a commitment to the Galaxy S4 with their swift upgrades to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. And while we would be shocked to see U.S. carriers release the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update first, ahead of the international roll outs, we expect the U.S. once again to be in the very front of the line.

Not only is the United States a key battleground for Samsung, but it's also the place where the Galaxy S4 launch took place. Samsung seems to favor launch regions when it comes to software releases. For instance, we saw the United Kingdom, the place where the Galaxy S3 arrived, get the update first. U.S. carriers were among the first to the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update.

We think that the U.S. will once again be quick to Android 4.4 KitKat though there is a good chance that it won't be first.

5. Verizon Galaxy S4 Release That Isn't Last

We also think that there is a good chance that Verizon won't be last to the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update. Before Samsung encountered issues with Android 4.3, Verizon was slated to be among the first to the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 updates. It was one of the first to the Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update.

While it hasn't righted the slow update ship, it's doing a whole lot better with its newer devices. The Verizon Moto X is a prime example of this. It's hard to think that it will be first to Android 4.4 KitKat, but we'd be willing to bet that it won't be last. It's shown signs of improvement when it comes to speed and we think that will carry over into next year for Galaxy S4 users.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Android-4.3-Update

We've also seen the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update rumored for arrival. The rumor came from the same document that leaked out Samsung's supposed Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat plans. The document suggested that the Galaxy S3 would be getting Android 4.4 KitKat and that Samsung is targeting a roll out by the end of April. We haven't seen any sign of the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update since.

6. It's Coming

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is getting older. In May, it will turn two years old. Google recommends that manufacturers stop support after 18 months and unfortunately, we're firmly in that territory with the Galaxy S3. Even so, we don't think Samsung skips Android 4.4 KitKat. And we have a few reasons why we feel that way.

First, the Galaxy S3 is still in the hands of millions and millions of people around the globe. It's Samsung's most popular phone. It's hard to see it dropping support before the two year mark. Especially when the company made users wait virtually all year for a major Android update. Second, simple enough, the update is rumored and we find that leak to be reliable. It was, after all, the same site that first reported the delay from Android 4.2 and Android 4.3.

And finally, Android 4.4 KitKat was designed with low-end devices in mind. The Samsung Galaxy S3?s hardware is still better than some phones from 2013. And it has 2GB of RAM, Android 4.4 KitKat can run on devices running as low as 512MB.

The only way we see Samsung skipping this is if things go horribly wrong in testing. We've seen issues with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean but we've also heard good things about the update. We'd be shocked if Samsung skipped a Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 update.

7. Final Update

If an update does roll out, expect it to be the Samsung Galaxy S3?s last. It's already teetering on the edge of 18 months and we haven't seen Samsung firmly commit to a support path longer than two years. While we believe Android 4.4 KitKat is on the way, it's hard to imagine another update for a phone that is likely going to be two years old by the time the update rolls out.

8. U.S. Carriers Way Behind Curve

When and if an update rolls out, we expect U.S. carriers to be far behind the curve when it comes to timing. While we've seen U.S. carriers step up to the plate for their flagship devices, older devices have suffered. The older a device is, the more difficult it is to upgrade. Carriers also tend to focus on their newer, more expensive devices.

The Galaxy S3 was behind the Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in the United States. The device was also behind the rest of the world by a few weeks and in some cases, several weeks. The Verizon Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update rolled out a month after the international variant got its update. The Galaxy S3 isn't getting any younger either and with Galaxy Gear support out of the way, there isn't a monetary incentive to get these updates out in a hurry.

We expect U.S. carriers to lag behind with the Galaxy S3 update. We think that the United Kingdom will get the update first, if it rolls out. The U.S. should be weeks behind at least.

9. Verizon Galaxy S3 Last to Android 4.4

We're calling it now. The Samsung Galaxy S3, which was last amongst major carriers to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, will be last to Android 4.4 KitKat. Verizon has shown promise but its older devices continue to get the short end of the stick. Carriers like C Spire and Cricket rolled out their updates in the same week as Verizon. That's saying something.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

galaxy-note-3

Like the Samsung Galaxy S4 KitKat update, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update was confirmed by French carrier SFR who says that it will be rolling out the update in and around late January and early February. Again, this falls in line with a leaked document that suggested that January would be the month that Samsung's latest flagship would get the software.

10. It's Coming

We heard back in early November that the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update had entered testing at Samsung and all signs are that it's on its way. Hard to argue with credible rumors and evidence and given that the Galaxy Note 3 is only a few weeks old, we expect a long life out of Samsung's flagship.

11. Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat Roll Out Shortly After GS4

We think the Samsung Galaxy S4 gets Android 4.4 KitKat first, followed by the Galaxy Note 3. We would imagine a gap of at least a few days, possibly a week or so, between the updates. If we had to guess, we'd say the start of the roll out will take place in January with most carriers getting the update in February.

12. New Features, Fixes

Because the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is so new and because the roll out appears to be coming before the arrival of the Galaxy S5, it's hard to say what will be on board the software when it arrives. No doubt, it will have fixes and enhancements for current features but it's hard to suggest anything new for the device.

We think that it could mirror the Galaxy S4?s Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update which was relatively minor compared to the updates for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. Both of those devices received substantial feature upgrades that brought Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 features to both devices. We're predicting a relatively small release here with Android 4.4 KitKat and a much larger update later in the year with Galaxy S5 features aboard.

13. Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Amongst First to Android 4.4

Believe it or not, Verizon was one of the first carriers to announce Galaxy Note 3 release information. Huge, considering the carrier has normally been last to such launches. The carrier was among the first to the Galaxy S4 update and we think that this speed will continue with the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat release.

Don't be shocked if it's amongst the first in the United States to Android 4.4.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

P9300220-575x383

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was also included on the leaked document. Like the Galaxy S3 update, its Android 4.4 KitKat update is said to becoming after the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 updates, perhaps in April. We haven't seen any further confirmation which means that the update is up in the air, at least for the moment.

14. It's Coming

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was one of the first to arrive with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. And given that, we expected it to be one of the first to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. That of course didn't happen and users were forced to wait all year for an upgrade to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Android 4.3 represented the first major update for the Galaxy Note 2 and we can't see Samsung abandoning this phone after one major update.

It's also nowhere close to its first birthday in the United States, or elsewhere, so we can get behind an Android 4.4 KitKat release at some point in 2014.

15. Release After Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 Update

We expect the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 update to land after the Galaxy S3 update. Samsung almost always updates its Galaxy S line first and the moves to the Galaxy Note. We suspect that this is based on adoption rates. The Galaxy Note is simply not as popular as the Galaxy S. We think the two updates will indeed be close to each other, just like they were with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and we wouldn't be surprised to see the device get upgraded in the first half of next year.

April is rumored, we know, but given the issues that we saw with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and Samsung's focus likely on the Galaxy S5 and its newer devices, we wouldn't be surprised if we saw some carriers wait until May or June to get this device upgraded.

16. New Features, Fixes

Like the Galaxy S3, we expect this update to mimic past updates. That means enhancements, fixes and the addition of a feature or two. Galaxy S5 features are a prime candidate but so are some of the features from the Galaxy Note 2.

We would love to see Air Command, for instance, come to the Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.4 KitKat.

17. Verizon Galaxy Note 2 Dead Last to Android 4.4

Do not be surprised when the AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular and T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 variants receive the update before the Verizon model. Verizon simply hasn't shown any interest in getting its older devices upgraded in the same time frame as other carriers, choosing to march to the beat of its own drum instead.

Other Galaxy Smartphones

Those are obviously the big boys but Samsung's smartphone lineup isn't just comprised of four big name smartphones. There are others. The original Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 are both dead in the water. They've been out for 18 months and have received several updates already. Typically, Samsung uses Google's 18 month rule and it normally updates its mid-range phones with two major updates. Anything after that is extremely gray and unlikely.

P7120021-575x383

18. Devices like the Galaxy S4 mini, which just received the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update in the U.S., will almost certainly get the update to Android 4.4 KitKat. And given that Galaxy S3 mini just reached the U.S., we could see it getting an update too. And we have no doubt that Samsung's Galaxy S4 Active will be getting upgraded at some point down the road, it's just a matter of when. It still is on Android 4.2, after all.

19. The Samsung Galaxy Mega should also get an update at some point in the future, but we would expect its update, and the other non-big name updates, to arrive much later in 2014 after the flagships get their fill.

Galaxy Tablets

20. We expect Samsung to upgrade a number of tablets with Android 4.4. In our eyes, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Note 8.0, and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition to all get upgraded. They're all new enough and we doubt that Samsung is going to leave them behind in the face of the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display getting iOS 8.

P9300198-575x383

Keep in mind, these are predictions, based on history, leaks, policies and pure old fashioned gut instincts. It's entirely possible that things will play out differently when the time comes.

HTC One Android 4.3 Update for Verizon Approved, Here is the Changelog - Droid Life

htc one verizon

The HTC One on Verizon is ready to receive its Android 4.3 update this week. Tipped to have been approved by HTC's executive director of product management, Verizon has now posted the support documents, making everything official and giving us all of the details surrounding this update, which as been finalized as build 2.10.605.1.

In terms of new stuff after the update, users will see the ability to add their own tracks to Highlights videos. And that's pretty much it. The rest is bug fixes for charging with a Mophie Juicepack, correction of faint ringing noise with earpieces, and the option to play purchased ringtones.  Oh, Verizon also took a moment to add more bloatware to the phone.

With approval by Verizon, I'd imagine we will see the update begin to rollout as early as today, with an extended rollout happening throughout the week.

Let us know if you see it!

How to Unroot Samsung Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100 to Official Firmware [GUIDE] - International Business Times UK

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 first shipped with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and was later upgraded to Android 4.1.2. Ahead of the official release, the device received the latest Android 4.2.2 software via custom builds released by developers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

To install custom ROM, the device should be rooted and have custom recovery installed. But rooting the device voids manufacturer’s warranty. However, users can reclaim the warranty back by unrooting the handset.

Here is an opportunity for Galaxy Note 2 users who have rooted their devices to unroot the same by following our step-by-step guide and return to stock official firmware.

IBTimes UK reminds its readers that it will not be held liable for any mishap. Users are also advised to verify that their devices meet following requirements.

Pre-requites

1) Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to transfer files between the Android device and computer.

2) Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone to connect the Android device with the computer and use the Android SDK with it. [Press Menu>> Settings>> Applications. From there navigate and click on Development option and ensure the USB Debugging Mode is turned on.]

3) As the tutorial might wipe out all data of the phone, create a backup. If the device is having any custom recoveries such as CWM/TWRP already installed then back up data using the recovery.

4) The Galaxy Note should have above 80% battery charge.

5) The phone should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.

6) The Galaxy Note 2 should be rooted. Click here for step-by-step guide to root Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

7) The official Jelly Bean firmware works only on Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100. Applying this to any incorrect variant might brick the device. Therefore, verify the model number of the Galaxy device by selecting Settings>> About Phone>> Model number.

Steps to unroot Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to stock official firmware

Step-1: Download appropriate (according to region) official firmware for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to the computer

Official firmware download link

Step-2: Extract the downloaded zip file to get a .tar.md5 file along with few other files

Step-3: Download Odin3 v1.85 which will help to install the official firmware. Extract the Odin zip

Step-4: Switch off the Galaxy Note 2 and wait for five to six seconds for vibration to confirm complete power off

Step-5: Now boot the phone into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until the device turns on. Now press the Volume Up button to continue to enter Download Mode

Step-6: Now run Odin by double clicking on the Odin executable file

Step-7: Connect the Note to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait until Odin recognises the phone. Once the device is connected successfully an Added message will appear under Odin. Also the successful connection will be indicated by the ID: COM turning yellow with the COM port number

Note: If the Added message does not come, then try the USB port at the back of the computer. If Odin still fails to detect the device, then reinstall USB driver.

Step-8: Select these files extracted from the stock firmware zip folder to install on the phone

a) Click the PDA button and select the file with .tar.md5 extension

b) Click the Phone button and select file with Modem in its name

c) Click the CSC button and select file with CSC in its name

d) Click the PIT button and select the .pit file

Note: Ignore the last three steps (b, c and d) in case such files are not found.

Step-9: Configure Odin settings. Ensure the Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected in Odin. But uncheck the Re-partition option, select it only when a .pit file is being used

Step-10: Once everything is set, click the Start button in Odin. The installation should begin now and would take few minutes to complete

Step-11: Upon completion of the installation process, the phone will restart automatically and soon a PASS message with green background will appear in the extreme left box at the top of Odin indicating successful installation. When the hone screen appears on the phone, unplug the USB cable from the device to disconnect it from the computer

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 should now be unrooted and back to stock official firmware. Head over to Settings>> About phone to verify the software version running on the handset.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Review: Samsung's Flagship Brings Latest High-End ... - International Business Times

In general, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has largely been well-received in the smartphone enthusiast community. Here's our take on Samsung's latest big thing.

Standard Specs/Improvements From The Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 definitely packs far beefier specs than the Galaxy Note 2, which preceded it. The main difference is that the Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7-inch 1920×1080 Full HD Super AMOLED display while maintaining roughly the same width as the Galaxy Note 2, which features a 5.5-inch 1280×720 HD Super AMOLED display. Depth and brightness have also improved with the diamond pixel RGBG PenTile display structure that the Galaxy Note 3 uses, especially when compared to the S-Stripe RGB seen on the Galaxy Note 3. Overall visual presentation on the Note 3 has greatly improved; tiny image details are much more visible than on the Note 2, and individual pixels are not visible.

For hardware, the Galaxy Note 3 features a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core LTE processor and a 1.9GHz Exynos 5420 octa-core 3G processor, both of which pack more power than the 1.6 GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor used in the Galaxy Note 2. The Note 3 also includes 32GB and 64GB storage options with micro SD expandable storage and 3GB of RAM, all of which are an increase from the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB options and 2GB RAM on the Note 2. The Galaxy Note 2 was sold with the 16GB model as the standard and most prominent model on the market, while the standard model for the Galaxy Note 3 is its 32GB option.

More powerful CPUs and increased RAM especially give the Galaxy Note 3 a functionality boost in that general screen handling and app operation are much smoother. There is little to no lag seen on the Galaxy Note 3, which runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The Galaxy Note 2 introduced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, an earlier iteration of the Jelly Bean line, which has seen general improvement over time. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is powered by a 3200mAh battery while the Galaxy Note is powered by a 3100mAh battery.

In 2013, Samsung has put a heavy focus on cameras and photography. Like its fellow 2013 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Note 3 features a 13-megapixel rear camera with a host of shooting modes as well as a 2-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy Note 2 features an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel front camera. In the Note 3 there is definitely an increase in sharpness and detail within photos; however, issues with low-light photography make the Note 3 fall short, even with the increase in megapixels.

Connectivity between the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 remain largely the same with 4G LTE, HSPA+, and Bluetooth; however, the Note 3 runs dual-band Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n) and also powers NFC, while the Note 2 runs single-band Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n/ac) and not NFC capabilities.

Exclusive Features

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Note 3 with many flagship specs, with main set being Air Command. Air Command directs users to the Action Memo, Screen Write, S-Finder, Scrapbook and Pen Window options, which with the Note 3's improved S-Pen allows can easily navigate their Samsung Galaxy Note 3 handset with simple dot, circle and box motions.

Action Memo allows users to write notes and turn those notes into smartphone functions, such as writing a phone number and adding it to contacts, or writing a words and putting them into a text. Screen Write allows users to use their home screen as a writing canvas. S-Finder allows users to search for things within their device. Scrapbook allows users to save photos, videos, webpages etc. into "scrapbooks," which can be accessed for future use. Pen Window allows users to access various app shortcuts, which can be viewed on top of other open apps, in a smaller window.

With each new Samsung Galaxy flagship, the debate over whether its features are actually useful or simply novelty continues. But many of the special features on the Galaxy Note 3 are practical for improved ease of use, and actually make the Galaxy Note 3 a “smart” phone. We find Action Memo and Pen Window most useful; however, other users many find benefits in other flagship features according to their specific needs. Whether they are saving pages, quickly searching, or quickly jotting down a note, there is bound to be a feature on the Galaxy Note 3 that appeals to any user.

Design and Handling

Many fans criticize Samsung for its use of plastic on its "premium" devices; however, with the Galaxy Note 3, the Korean manufacturer has stepped up its game with a premium look and feel on a polycarbonate exterior. The most notable physical feature on the Galaxy Note 3 is its faux-leather textured back panel, which is smooth and almost soft to the touch, and gives the device a grip, which stands to help users avoid careless drops. Despite being plastic, the textured back panel nearly looks like leather, which adds to its high-end appeal. It is reminiscent of a leather-bound notebook, something that Samsung played up in its marketing of the Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Note 3 may not be an immediate choice for many due to its large size. Even those who enjoy larger screens may find the Note 3 a bit too big and possibly too wide for comfortable one-hand operation. In comparison to the Galaxy Note 3, our Samsung Galaxy S4 handset seems positively tiny. The Galaxy Note 3 does include software that allows users to shrink and move their screen for easier accessibility; however, it is up to users to decide whether bigger is better for them.

Battery Life And Charging

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 boasts an impressive battery life. The Note 3 lasted near entire days with moderate to heavy use. We experienced battery life similar to that seen on our Samsung Galaxy S4, with the exception that data was left on at all times. However, this was not strictly tested, just observed from general use. We would charge our Galaxy Note 3 handset in the morning, and have it discharged throughout the day and at night while sleeping. With this method the handset would be fully charged by about 11 a.m. and at or near the yellow warning battery level by about 7 a.m. the next day, the Galaxy Note 3 went up to 19 hours discharged each day with moderate to heavy use.

What we did strictly test was standby battery life, and when left to its own devices, the Note 3 has lasted nearly seven days on standby, with data left on. Our tests yielded that the Galaxy Note 3 lasts more than six days and 20 hours from full charge to the yellow warning battery on standby or with very light use.

Screenshot_2013-12-09-12-20-38 (Left) Battery life from 100% to yellow warning battery – then plugged in to charge. (Right) Battery life from 100% to 6 + days, still not at yellow warning battery.  Fionna Agomuoh

We also tested charging time for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The Note 3 features the new USB 3.0 port, which provides up to 900mA current in comparison to the 500mA currently provided by USB 2.0 ports. The USB 3.0 port reportedly boasts fast transfer and charging speeds, and with the Galaxy Note 3, it took just over 2 and half hours for the handset to be fully charged from dead to 100 percent. In comparison to the Galaxy S4, we don't see much of a difference at our S4 handset equipped with a USB 2.0 port takes just under two hours to charge from dead to 100 percent. However, we take into consideration that the Galaxy Note 3 has a much larger battery (3200mAh) and overall capacity than the Galaxy S4 (2600mAh). In comparison to the Galaxy Note 2, which features a USB 2.0 port, averages about 3 hours from low battery to 100 percent, the Note 3 with its USB 3.0 port and larger battery does experience faster charging times. Notably, one of the issues users had with the Galaxy Note 2 was excessively long charging times, which appears to have been addressed with the upgraded technology in the Galaxy Note 3.

Camera

photo comparison Warmer tones on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 image; however, note the soft edges of the paper bag in comparison the the bag in the Samsung Galaxy S4 photo.  Fionna Agomuoh

The 12-megapixel camera on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is not much different from the lens seen on the Galaxy S4. Though rumors indicated that the camera on the Galaxy Note 3 would feature optical image stabilization, it ultimately released without the feature. Still, we noted the Galaxy Note 3 camera is a bit better at capturing images that the Galaxy S4, even with an unsteady hand. Image quality between the two devices is roughly the same, though the Galaxy Note 3 images often appear soft around certain edges, where you won’t see the same effects on a Galaxy s4 photo. One advantage of the Note 3 is that users don't have to stand quite as still to capture a good image, while one advantage of the Galaxy S4 is that it captures better details. When zoomed in, images on the Note 3 do present a bit blurry, while with a little more effort images on the Galaxy S4 will present sharper detail.

Price and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is marketed as a premium device, and its price tag does not let us forget that. On average, the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 300 with a two-year contract and $ 700 off contract, but this of course varies by carrier and retailer.

At Verizon the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 299.99 with a two-year contract and $ 699.99 at full price. At U.S. Cellular the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 299.99 with a two-year contract. At AT&T the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 299.99 with a two-year contract and $ 549.99 with one-year contract. Customers can also pay for the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 in 20 monthly payments of $ 35 under the AT&T Next program or at full price for $ 724.99. At Sprint the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 349.99 with a two-year contract and $ 699.99 at full price. At T-Mobile the Galaxy Note 3 sells for $ 199.99 upfront with 24 monthly payments of $ 21 under the network's UNcarrier plan, and $ 703.99 at full price. Retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, and Radio Shack  also sell the Galaxy Note 3 under the various carrier plans and prices.

We keep in mind that in addition to being a premium, flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 also includes a number of features that keeps its price high, including its increased RAM and internal storage. Even with these increases; however, the price of the Galaxy Note 3 is not much different from the price of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 during its initial release.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is definitely large and in charge. It brings the latest high-end specs, special features that are also practical and a substantial memory boost. But as always, even with its good points, the size of the Galaxy Note 3 is not for everyone. In addition to its large size, its price may also deter many prospective customers from choosing the Galaxy Note 3. Especially when you factor in that there are many smaller devices, boasting similar specs and smaller price tags. With the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung continues its niche line of devices that are suitable for select few that can really appreciate the Note 3 for what it is. If you can handle the Galaxy Note 3 in all its large-screened grandeur, we encourage you. If not, that's okay, Note 3 is not for everybody.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs. iPad Mini Retina 2: Go for a Samsung 8 or Apple Mini? - International Business Times AU

Samsung and Apple continue their rivalry into the tablet sector. Samsung has released their Samsung Galaxy Note 8 while Apple refreshed its line with the iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display. Combining the convenience of traditional laptops and smartphone functions, which tablet should consumers go for?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

The Galaxy Note offers consumers a list of impressive specs for its price. To begin with, the device runs on a 1.6 GHz Exynos 4412 quad-core processor plus 2GB internal memory. People particular about the speed of their devices can find this a good combination.

The device scored 1998 points in Geekbench 2. However, Sony Xperia Tablet Z outpaced the device in synthetic benchmarks. As for the GLBenchmark test, the device posted a frame rate of 18fps. It is acceptable for such device though some user may not be too thrilled about it. The Galaxy Note 8 only provides half the frame rate compared to high-end smartphones.

Generally, the Galaxy Note 8.0 offers reliable performance all throughout. However, it may not be the ideal choice for those looking for superior resolution. It shares similar pixel support with Asus FonePada and Nexus 7 but with a lower ppi at 189. Galaxy Note 8.0 falls behind iPad Mini 2 with Retina in this regard.

Just like with the Samsung Galaxy S4, people may find the storage a bit limited for the Note 8. The device features 16GB flash storage with 9GB accessible to the user. Fortunately, people can expand memory up to 64GB through the microSDXC card slot. An interesting feature in the Galaxy Note 8 is its ability to control home devices. The pre-loaded Smart Remote app and infrared transmitter lets people use it as a controller for devices like television sets and media players.

The device also comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Note 8 allows people to customize their Google OS. This allows users to tone down the interface if they find it a little too busy.

The device starts at $ 329.99.

Apple’s iPad Mini 2 with Retina

The new iPad mini 2 or iPad mini with Retina display proves Apple’s intent to stay on top the tablet wars. The device packs on an A7 chip plus 128GB satisfying anyone looking for the ultimate HD slate experience. The device also offers battery life working hand in hand with the powerful pixel support.

The iPad Mini 2 offers a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. This is four times the resolution of the original iPad. The screen size remains at 7.9 inches offering a pixel density of 326ppi. People looking for an incredibly sharp screen will find the iPad a good choice.

Apple did not change the design much. After all, their original iPad Mini sported a winning formula. The only difference is that the newer iPad Mini is thicker at 7.5mm compared to the 7.2mm of the first generation. It should not make any difference in terms of usage. The device is as lightweight and portable.

As mentioned, the iPad Mini 2 runs on the same A7 processor found on the iPad Air. This means it has a 64-bit component powering it up. The second generation iPad Mini also features the M7 motion coprocessor allowing longer battery life.

The tablet also offers an excellent 2D performance. The iPad Mini 2 scored an average of 2222 in Geekbench 2. This means it is around 3 times faster compared to the first generation. The device also scored 397ms in SunSpider 1.0.2. As with the iPad Air, the iPad Mini 2 runs on iOS 7. It has a range of Apple applications like Pages, GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto.

The device starts at $ 399.

People can settle for the Galaxy Note 8 if they want a tablet that can do the job. However, for those looking for a premium device and willing to spend more, then the iPad Mini 2 should be worth the extra dollars.
